synopsis
The First Morning (はじまりの朝 Hajimari no Asa?) is a 30-page manga drawn by Hiro Mashima as a promotional prologue to Phoenix Priestess,
set seven years before the start of the film. The chapter was adapted into a 12-minute animated short by the same staff that animated the film, and was released with the film's DVD on February 13, 2013 as a bonus extra.
It is also included in Funimation's English Blu-ray/DVD release of the film, exclusively with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

The priestess Éclair (エクレア Ekurea?) buys materials to sew together a stuffed bird doll. That night, the magic from her mystical Phoenix Stone brings the doll to life. The doll attempts to befriend Éclair and asks to be given a name, but Éclair tells him she despises magic and calls him "Bird" out of contempt. She brings the doll to a nearby village where she works as a fortune-teller by looking into others' pasts and making up predictions. One of her customers is a young boy—Dist (ディスト Disuto?)—who asks her in vain to revive his dead pet weasel. When told that he too will die someday, the boy tells Éclair his desire to live forever.

While returning home, Éclair notices she has lost her Phoenix Stone and returns to the village to find it. The doll warns her of wolves that prowl the village at night, but Éclair rebuffs him. Failing to find the stone, Éclair is ambushed by wolves and blacks out. She awakens the next morning in her house with her stone, and goes outside to find the tattered doll, who reveals he found her stone and fended off the wolves. Éclair accepts the doll's friendship and names him Momon (モモン?), admitting it to be the name she planned to give him. Deciding to learn more about her stone, the two set out to a city where they briefly cross paths with Lucy, Natsu, and Happy of the Fairy Tail wizard guild.
